June 21: Civil Rights activists Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner murdered by the Klu Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi.
All three Civil Rights activists were in their 20s. Chaney was a CORE field worker from Meridian, Mississippi; Goodman (an anthropology student) and Schwerner (a social worker) were (Jewish) activists from New York.
Massive FBI effort subsequently puts the Klan perpetrators behind bars [7 men found guilty].
