China, May 16: The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was launched by Mao Zedong. It was actually a struggle for power within the Communist Party of China and eventually led to civil war.
At first, the campaign is supposedly to rid China of its “liberal bourgeoisie” elements and to continue the class struggle by China’s youth who formed Red Guards group around the country. However, it evolved into destructive chaos.
The revolution caused massive upheaval and destruction across China.
