1991 CE: OPERATION SOLOMON

–rescues remainder of Ethiopian Jewry (Beta Israel) in 36–hour airlift.

Non–stop flights by 34 Israeli aircraft transport 14,500 Ethiopian Jews to Israel… Operation Solomon transported twice as many Ethiopian Jews to Israel as Operation Moses (1984) and Operation Joshua (1985) combined…

The operation also included a flight which set a world record for the highest number of passengers on a single flight, when on May 24, 1991, an El Al 747 carried 1,122 Ethiopians… Originally the plan was for 760 passengers, but the Ethiopians were so slightly built, that 61% more were finally squeezed–in… Note that the 1,122 count does not include the two babies who were born on the flight.
