VT: Buckminster Fuller students construct prototype geodesic dome.
Bennington College, VT: Architect–Visionary–Designer–Futurist–Inventor–Author, Buckminster Fuller erects the world’s first geodesic dome building that could support its own weight with no practical limits. 14’ in diameter, the geodesic dome was constructed of aluminum aircraft tubing and vinyl–plastic skin, in the form of a tetrahedron.
To prove its strength to “non–believers,” Fuller and several fellow co–worker students, actually hung from the structure’s geodesic framework. Fuller’s “launch” was successful. Within a few years, thousands of geodesic domes dotted the world. Simultaneously, Buckminister Fuller had launched the “Buckminster Fuller legend,” as well.
