April: Shuttered physically and by Communist law since WWII, Shanghai’s main and only synagogue, Ohel Moshe, allowed to reopen for its first wedding in 60 years.
The Ohana family of Shanghai holds its daughter’s wedding – under carved sign in the shul sanctuary untouched since the 1940s:
“Dah Lifnei Mi Atah Omed”
“(Mortal) Be aware and alert before Whom you stand”
Apparently, post–wedding, the [Torah Scroll] ark was sealed again (as best as I could ascertain by physical inspection December 2008).
The entire first floor has essentially been transformed into a photo exhibit hall featuring the “safe harbor” granted the Jews in Shanghai, first by the Japanese, and then by the Chinese, who re–conquered it. Note that the exhibit radically downplays the Japanese role in the saga.
