Medved founded the Pacific Jewish Center in the 1970s, a synagogue in Venice, California, where he then served as president for fifteen years. A baal teshuva (returnee to traditional Judaism), Medved was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia. He grew up in San Diego where his scientist father worked for the defense contractor Convair and later for NASA. He is a graduate of both Yale College and Yale Law School.
