Borges was appointed Director of the National Public Library in 1955. Due to a hereditary condition, by that time he had became completely blind. (He was in his mid–fifties)

Borges was later an inspiration to Italian writer Umberto Eco, and portrayed as a key figure – the blind fourteenth century monk and librarian – in Eco’s mystery–classic, The Name of the Rose (1983).
